The only connection I have to this character is from the 1984 movie. Didn’t read the comics and had little to no interest in the TV show so if you dear reader don’t agree with anything in this review. Please just say that I’m an old guy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Kara Zor-El ( Milly Alcock) is busy celebrating her birthday(for a long time) while on a planet that can help her feel drunk unlike Earth. While at a bar jamming out to Wet Leg(because that’s what you do) soon runs into Ruthye(Eve Ridley), a young girl who seeks revenge against Krem(Matthias Schoenaerts). An evil s.o.b. that killed her whole family. Kara tells her that seeking revenge won’t bring back the people she lost and refuses to help her. I do wonder if she would say the same thing to The Bride after what she went through before her coma. Of course this all changes when the bad guys poison her dog Krypto. They could have easily killed him, but hey this is a PG-13 movie here. Seeking revenge on dead animals only happens in R rated movies, OK. So now our two heroines are on a quest to find Krem and get the antidote to save the dog.
First off, Milly Alcock is good casting as our lead character. She has great charm, chemistry with the other actors and I enjoyed her journey from being a self hating drunk to actually being a superhero. Even though she did cost the lives of some innocent people after a choice she made. Kara is basically a good person throughout. The only other person I would have cast as our lead super hero is Jessica Rothe. She is best known from the Happy Death Day series. Her character’s journey from being a drunk party girl to being a hero was better portayed than what Kara goes through. Eve Ridley as our young vengeance seeking warrior was also good and I kind of wish she had her own movie. Jason Momoa as Lobo, this violence seeking dude who looks like he was rejected by the WWE was fine. I mean he had a purpose to say somewhat witty lines when the story needed to break the tension. When it comes to our lead bad guy. Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem was ok but was lacking any sort of charisma I want from a villain. As campy as she may have appeared, Faye Dunaway in the 84 version was a lot more memorable.
There was nothing bad about this new Supergirl. It’s a decent watch but it’s also extremely basic. I don’t blame the director, Craig Gillespie who previously did a fun take on a iconic Disney character in Cruella. Unfortunately while this may have a good lead character. The story itself is just your average run of the mill super hero feature. Replace Supergirl with any other comic book character with powers and you basically have the same movie. This is writer Ana Nogueira’s feature film debut and the script reeks of being a made for TV pilot. The cast along with Milly Alcock are doing the best they can with the material, but there is nothing profound about any of their character developments. Yes, we know that Kara is upset about her planet being destroyed and having to move to a new world. But we never really see the reason why she left Earth. Krem’s only focus is to steal women from other planets so that they can use them for breeding. It’s like if Mad Max: Fury Road was set in Space but instead of Furiossa, we got Supergirl I also wish that this was set on Earth. I would rather see this character fight bad guys in the city than just alien creatures on other planets, but that is a small nitpick.
I wasn’t a fan of James Gunn’s Superman because I thought he couldn't decide what tone it should be. It got to be much too comedic when it didn't need to be, but here. I wish it tried for more laughs. The script delivered maybe one or two lines worthy of a chuckle. It could have used another run through by another writer. This needed the work of Diablo Cody(Jennifer’s Body) or even Jen and Sylvia Soska (Dead Hooker in a Trunk). I wanted a movie that was super and it ended being mediocre. Supergirl is not a terrible time but also not one I’m going to remember either. The needle drops by bands like Sleigh Bells and Rilo Kiley certainly make me want to pick up the soundtrack more than re watch the movie
