Cast : Zendaya, Robert Pattinson
Writer and Director: Kristoffer Borgil
**** and a 1/2*'s Out of Five
After hearing about a shocking and disturbing confession from his fiancee. A young man starts to doubt the woman he is suppoue to marry in this very dark but ultimately uplifiting drama from Kristoffer Borgil (Dream Sceanario)
When the movie begins. It shows how our movie couple got together in a typical meet cute way done in other rom coms. Charlie(Robert Pattinson) notices Emma(Zendaya) reading a book but instead of just asking her about it. He deciides to pretend that he has already read it. Thier trust in each other grows in each scene and by the time we see them dance together during the opening credits. It's clear they are very much in love despte being polar opposites. Emma is strong and opinionated while Charlie not wanting to upset anyone is kind of a little bitch
While visiting the caterer for
thier upcoming wedding. Emma and Charile meet up with their friends
Rachel (Alana Haim) and Mike (Mamoudou Athie) for drinks and
conversation. When a topic gets brought up about the worst thing they
have ever done. Each person reveals thier sorid past. Few of the stories told I
didn't belive, some were cruel and some were funny but very mean. When
Emma confesses her secret, not only are the people at the table shocked by what
they heard. You can heal audible gasps from the audiences when you
see this in theaters. At this day in age when people would rather look at thier
phones than the big screen. It's refreshing to see people being fully engaged with just
dialogue only.
After hearing Emma's confession you will either want to learn more about her or think that she is a monster the way Rachel does. It should be noted that while her confession is indeed shocking. Emma is the only person who never actually did anything. All the rest I belive have done what they said they did. Except for Charlie because his confession semed very misleading.
There have been talks about this movie being immoral or only presenting this type of topic to just shock people. The term Trigger Warnings gets used a lot because people think that A24 should have used them in the marketing of this movie but I disagree. It never displays any heavy imagery or anything really disturbing. It's all just conversation and characters expressing thier thougts and ideas. Do we really want to live in a society where even the mention of words can't be said because someone might get offended by them. How are we suppuse to change anything if we get so upset on the mere mention of words.
I have read and watched reviews from other critics saying that the ending was a cop out but I think it ends on an optismistic note. Can we forgive the past actions of the people we love or are we going to treat them harshly for the rest of their lives.
The entire cast is wonderful and I defientely see Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Original Screenplay (Kristoffer Borgil) Best Actress(Zendaya) Best Suppourting Actress (Alana Haim), Best Music(Daniel Pemberton), Best Editing(Joshua Raymond Lee & Kristoffer Borgil) and Best Cinematography(Arseni Khachaturan)
