The Fun - Raiser (MSPIFF 44)

A joyous crowd pleasing comedy that pays homage to the great slapstick classics of the early 30’s mixed with great ensemble features of the late 70’s. The Fun-Raiser may just be the sleeper hit comedy of 2025.
The story mainly centers around a community who wants to put together a fund raiser to help repair their run down performance art school. Sounds simple enough but when you add in a case of food poisoning, a building that has pieces of ceiling falling down, a owner constantly getting high, and other crazy shennigans. It’s not going to be an easy night for anyone.
This movie is the perfect example of Murphy’s Law. Everything that can go wrong, will and we are absolutely loving every minute with these characters. For a movie that is only eighty five minutes. We spend a good amount of time on each person. Even the smallest roles get their best scenes and that is a big credit to director Wyatt McDill and editor Carlos Lamas. The movie is so well paced that it feels very much like it is a staged play. You expect with this many speaking parts that there had to be some sort of rehersal. Only to find out that it was shot in just sixteen days is astounding. Which means that this was a very well written script. What many sitcoms try to do in one season. This does it in just one feature film.
Even tough this is set in a town in Minnesota. It has this look of being any place and yet no place. It’s like it really doesn’t have to be set anywhere because every character in this feature is someone you know or have met. Even though some situations are over exaggerated a tad. Not a single person feels like they are just simply a comic trope.
The Fun – Raiser was simply a wonderful movie with a great cast, a tight notch script and a very impressive crew.
